New Flood Monitoring Stations Installed Upstream of the Ashley River
Flood-prone communities in Dorchester County, South Carolina now have additional tools to monitor rising water conditions upstream of the Ashley River.
In partnership with SECOORA and Dorchester County Emergency Management, a new real-time water level monitoring station has been installed to improve situational awareness during heavy rainfall and flood events near Charleston. The stations provide continuous environmental data that helps emergency managers better understand changing conditions and respond more quickly when flooding threatens roads, neighborhoods, and infrastructure.
Green Stream provided the water level sensor and was on site with SECOORA and Dorchester County’s emergency management department.
Projects like this demonstrate the value of collaboration between coastal scientists, emergency managers, and technology providers. Local monitoring networks help communities move beyond regional forecasts by delivering ground-truth data directly from vulnerable waterways.
The Ashley River watershed can experience rapid changes during intense rainfall, especially in low-lying areas influenced by both inland runoff and coastal conditions. Real-time monitoring helps improve awareness before conditions become dangerous.
